A New Home: Chapter 2.13 (Mitch)

Mitch left the living room and grabbed his bags making his way up the stairs to his new room. The dorms looked pretty much like Credence described them, not changing much in the last 4 years.

On one of the bedroom doors was a little paper sign with the names, Deryn and Mitch. He opened the door. Someone had left a cat carrier on one of the beds and a calico kitten roamed about it. Mitch dropped his bag and came closer, “Heyyy buddy, you belong to my roommate?” he held out a hand for the kitten to smell but after a brief whiff, it went back inside the carrier to hide.

“Awww little buddy you don’t wanna hang out?” Mitch looked sadly at Hermes’ carrier.

The door opened behind him and someone called, “Hey roomie!”

“Hey!” Mitch stood up from his crouch and turned back towards the door, immediately seeing two people. A normal-looking slender, feminine teen with golden-brown hair tied up in a bun and a strange-looking bird person, “oh uh,” he pointed at Deryn, making a quick guess based on the voice, “you’re the one who called me roomie right? Cause I don’t think I had two roommates listed.”

The bird person’s wings stretched out slightly and he bounced on his heels, “I just came to say hi to Deryn’s kitty.”

“This is Onez,” Deryn said, they came forward and looked at Hermes hiding in his carrier, “Oh you okay boy?” They asked, coming closer. The cat looked agitated for a second and then relaxed.

Mitch rubbed the back of his head and laughed a tiny bit, “Sorry I probably smell like a big dog, got a Doberman at home.” He already missed Diablo a bit but since he wasn’t a service dog he couldn’t bring him. Besides that, he was technically Credence’s dog, not that they ever made a distinction about what belonged to who.

Deryn scratched the cat and brought him out to show Onez, “This is Hermes, he’s a kitten a female stray at the local shelter I volunteer at gave birth to,”

Onez came up and scratches Hermes gently on the head with his bird claw hand

“He’s a cute little guy,” Mitch says, knowing he’d be living with the kitten he gave him and Onez some space to pet him and instead started unpacking his things. Was it too early to text Credence? Was he being a little clingy to feel so desperate to talk to him when it’s only been a few hours?

“I’m Deryn,” Mitch’s new roommate extended a hand.

“Mitch,” he paused his unpacking to shake their hand with a friendly, slightly crooked smile.

Deryn smiled, “Alright, we should give Hermes some space.”

“Awww,” Onez whined, disappointed.

Deryn patted his shoulder, “You’ll get to see him another day, right now he’s overwhelmed and only keeping still because I’m influencing him.”

“Mmmmmm okay, see you tomorrow Hermes!” Onez gave Hermes another little head scratch and started to leave, he waved at Mitch, “Bye Mitch! If you wanna text your boyfriend you should just do it. I’m sure he won’t think you’re being too clingy!” He said with sincerity before leaving the room, “bye Deryn!”

Deryn facepalmed, “Forgive Onez, he’s not exactly on the upside of telepathic etiquette.”

Mitch mentally ran back through every thought he had since Onez stepped in. How deep did the kid probe? He didn’t seem to think there was anything off about Mitch but he could have learned something he shouldn’t have about Credence. Mitch would have to avoid him in the future. Taking a deep breath, Mitch forced himself to compartmentalize and get back to normal.

“Sorry, I’ll have a talk with him about privacy tomorrow,” Deryn added.

Mitch chuckled, shaking his head. He shouldn’t act too put off about it, “so what about you? What can you do?”

“I’m an Empath,” Deryn said, “Mind if I get comfortable?”

So also psychic? But they wouldn’t be able to get too much from just emotions… Hopefully, can’t exactly avoid his roommate. Mitch shrugged, “go ahead.”

Deryn sat down, removing their shoes, then they reached into their sweater and removed their bra. “I’m a little surprised I’m rooming with a boy, but then again I did write no preference on my application form.”

“Same” he laughed.

“Pronouns are they/them,” Deryn informed him and laid down half on their bed with legs dangling off the edge, feet still on the floor.

“He/him” Mitch replied, he finished getting a good chunk of his stuff away and sat down, pulling his phone out to text Credence, agonizing over how to tell him he missed him already and not get an eye-rolling emoji back.

“Where are you from?” Deryn asked, drawing his attention back to them.

“Grew up in Arizona, moved to the New York area when I was like 8 though.”

“Do you like it?” Deryn asked, sitting up to undo their hair, letting it fall down.

“Arizona or New York? Either place is fine I guess. I don’t remember much of my friends from Arizona or anything, just how hot it always was and how close Abuela lived, how easy it was to go to her house every evening and just watch her cook.”

Deryn smiled nostalgically, “Sounds nice, and New York, how is the big city?”

“Nice, met a lot of other cape kids, and my boyfriend, here in New York and it’s definitely my hometown now.”

“You’re a cape kid?”

“Yeah…”

“Cool, my parents are mutants but they aren’t capes or anything,” Deryn said, “Now what was that about a boyfriend?” they asked with a teasing note, “Does he have a name?”

“Yeah, Credence.” Mitch showed them his home screen photo. The ‘best’ photo he had of him; in which Credence was barely visible, wearing a hoodie and his long black hair obscuring most of his face as he hugged Diablo.

Deryn gave it a look, arching a brow. “Camera shy?” they asked.

“Yeah, he hates having his picture taken, absolutely refuses to believe he’s handsome.”

“Awww,” Deryn smirked softly, “I’m glad you found someone you love.”

“Thanks! Do you have anyone?”

Deryn paused, looking uncomfortable, “Not… anymore…”

“Ahh sorry, I’ve stepped in it,” Mitch said sheepishly.

“No, no, it’s a fair question,” Deryn said, “I… I messed up, and it’s still fresh.”

“I’m sorry…”

“Thanks,” Deryn smiled sadly, “Ugh, you get back to gushing about your boyfriend so I can feel that contact-high empath feels,” they teased.

Mitch laughed, he dropped down on his bed and started typing out his “I love you”s and “I miss you”s giving up on playing it cool while he answered Deryn. “He’s super cute but refuses to listen to me. Believe it or not, that is the most complete pic I have of him. Most of them He’s running away so it’s all blurry.”

“That’s the feeling,” Deryn said, lying down and smiling. “Oh, silly boy.”

“He only sat still for that one cause I said I wanted one of Diablo so he had to hold him still and I would for sure crop him out.”

“You sneaky bastard,” Deryn said, “Smart.”

“He’s hard to trick. I was proud of myself for that one… now if only I could get his face.”

“You ever tried stealing his school photo album? Or was he too cool to sit in for a class picture?”

“He doesn’t keep any of that old nostalgia stuff around.” He threw it all out after the Tzari war.

“Damn,” Deryn stretches, Hermes has calmed down and started exploring a little.

Hermes had come out of his carrier but was intimidated at the height of the bed. “We’ll need to make you a ramp in the morning,” Deryn said, petting him.

“He looks young, how old is he?”

“About twenty weeks.”

“Just a little baby huh.”

“Yeah,” Deryn opened a bag and retrieved clothes and bathing products, “I should hit the shower.”

Mitch saluted, “I will guard your cat with my life in the meantime.”

“I’m sure you will,” Deryn smirked and went out with a wave, “Bye.”

Mitch focused back on his message to Credence. Once Deryn was gone he started typing out his actual report about what he had seen, learned, and who he had met so far, including, of course, the strange alien from some unknown planet. He received a quick reply of an eye roll emoji, an ‘understood’, and after a long time of watching a … pulse, he got an ‘I miss you too’.

Backstory

Deryn was the children of two women who love each other so much, both being queer they allowed Deryn to express themself however they wanted from a young age, and Deryn although assigned male at birth always had a very unique perspective on gender, feeling neither yet also both male and female at times.

Deryn was born in Pennsylvania but when they were six their family relocated to Pennsylvania when their mom was offered tenure at a University. The anxiety of moving to another state and the children finding Deryn ‘weird’ is what caused their Empathic powers to awaken in second grade.

Deryn’s powers were always temperamental, although their Ma tried to help them learn focus techniques they never quite been able to turn their empathy off. Still, their powers allowed Deryn to make friends easily, being able to know what to say and do, but Deryn always had a nagging feeling people didn’t like them for who they truly were.

Deryn’s life was otherwise ordinary for many years, their mothers keeping them very busy with extracurriculars; piano, yoga, meditation, and later a part-time job at a family friend’s coffee shop.

However, Deryn’s life went upside down with their first love; Anders. Anders was a young and closeted transgender boy at school, Deryn being always so understanding drew them together and they had a brief relationship where they both lost their virginity. However Anders fear, anxieties, and religious-induced self-hatred pushed Deryn to try to push him toward accepting himself and coming out, but he wasn’t ready and the two fall apart soon.

Love for Deryn came again a year later when they met Charlotte a new student at their school. Deryn had learned from Anders, and the two were in love like only dumb teens could be, thinking they’d be together forever, them against the world… And then Charlotte’s mother died in a drunken hit and run, and she was utterly destroyed, Deryn let her grieve for weeks, then months, but Charlotte wasn’t getting any better.

So Deryn tried to help with her power, breaking the greatest taboo of any psychic; she altered her girlfriend’s mind. She tried to ease Charlotte’s pain, but Deryn was inexperienced; they meant only to ease the pain but instead, they took it completely; Charlotte could no longer feel anything about their mother and quickly became horrified at the betrayal.

By all accounts Deryn should have gone to jail, what they’d done was a severe crime, but Charlotte didn’t report them, they just shut them out. Deryn fell into a depression, they admitted what they’d done to their worried mothers. They understood Deryn’s motives but what they had done was crossing a line that never should be crossed.

So their Mom made some calls, she was related to someone who worked at Ravenhold and asked to get her child help. It was then that Deryn was sent to Ravenhold the next year.

Arrival: Chapter 1.8 (Deryn)

Deryn’s mind pulsed with a hundred emotions at once; anticipation, anxiety, boredom, fear, joy. Some were their own, but most were not. As an Empath since the age of seven Deryn had largely learned to center themself and deal with the tide of emotions around them.

Hermes was a helpful little fellow, laying patiently in his cat carrier, and so Deryn used him as an anchor in the storm.

Deryn looked around scanning for a seat, their gaze drawn immediately to another teen, they couldn’t have been much more than four feet tall, swimming in a gray sweater and worn jeans that were several sizes too big for them, anxiety burned bright in that one. They had short brown hair and a smattering of freckles across their cheeks. On their lap was a gigantic maine coon.

They were seated, eyes clothes clearly trying some breathing exercises to maintain their calm.

“Is this seat taken?” Deryn asked softly.

“Eep!” The teen jumped up, and then proceeded to shrink, now only three feet tall. Their cat protectively coiled around their owner and staring Deryn down.

“Okay, not quite what I expected,” Deryn said, “Are you alright?”

The teen took a few breaths and slowly regained some size, now about four and a half feet, “yeah sorry, you… you startled me.”

“Can I try something?” Deryn offered, knowing they could help. “Take my hand.”

They nervously did and Deryn focused; sending a warm soothing radiance into them, banishing away anxiety and leaving behind a gentle peacefulness. The teen grew back once more reaching about five and a half feet.

“Oh that’s kinda nice.” they said, Deryn could feel their jaw and shoulders untense.

“I’m an Empath, I can help people with their feelings” Deryn smiled. “Now, may I sit?”

“Oh, yes.”

Deryn sat down and the Maine Coon came over, sniffing them, Deryn gave them a hand and the cat proceeded to rub herself all over.

“That was really nice,” they said.

“You should see what else these hands can do,” Deryn teased. Eli’s mind went somewhere naughty, turning bright red. While Deryn couldn’t read the thoughts proper; they had a gut feeling of where emotions came from.

They opened their cat carrier and Hermes peaked his head out. The Maine Coon came over to smell Hermes, who was a little cowed at the giant cat, being only a few months old.

“What brings you to Ravenhold?” Deryn asked.

“I… have a hard time controlling my powers.” They gave Deryn a self-deprecating smile, “as you saw. I wanted… a change of pace. To get out of my comfort zone a bit and maybe learn some confidence and control… and who doesn’t wanna be a hero?… I’m… Eli by the way, they/them pronouns” they held out their hand once more, for a shake this time.

“Deryn,” they  smiled and shook hands, “And same for they/them, don’t mind she/her either.” Deryn leaned back, opening their coat, “Being a hero seems strange, but I’ve always wanted to help people.”

A spark of disappointment went through Eli’s mind toward the handshake.  “You’re disappointed,” Deryn noted. “Empath, I’m warning you I can feel things and I’m bad at letting them go.”

“Oh uh,” Eli went from disappointment to embarrassment, “I just thought maybe I’d feel that calming again when we shook hands.”

“Ah, it’s a willing thing,” Deryn explains, “Want another shot?” they wink.

“No no it’s fine!” Eli waved their hands in front of them.

Deryn’s powers told them yes, but they didn’t press, they’d learned their lessons before, if painfully.

Next to them the Maine Coon had already begun licking Hermes’ head, having adopted the kitten in less than a minute it seemed.

“This is Angel. She’s mostly an emotional support cat but she does know some tasks to help me when I shrink.”

“Alright, and this is Hermes, my little boy.”

Deryn looked at Angel. “Hello Angel, I’m Deryn.”

Angel gave a little ‘mrrpp’ noise in answer.

“He’s adorable.” Eli reached their hand out to offer Hermes a sniff, “Is he still a kitten?”

“We think he’s about six months old, he was found abandoned with his siblings.” Deryn explained, “I work at a shelter, it’s where I got him.” They hadn’t found the mother but it had been likely she had died when searching for food for her kittens. “Is Angel a Maine Coon?”

“Yeah!”

“She’s a beauty, how old is she?”

“She’s 7 years old. Will be 8 in a few months.”

“Well, she still has a long way to go.” Deryn smiled. “So, I take it you can shrink down is your power?”

“Yeah I can shrink all the way down to  6 inches.”

“Oh wow,” Deryn says, then a thought came over remembering the state of Eli’s clothes, “What happens to your clothes?”

“… they uh… stay the same size… but! I sew and…” out of their pocket Eli pulled out a tiny little dress in a floral fabric. They were evidently proud of their work.

“That is A-do-ra-ble!” Deryn picked it up, it looked like it belonged to a little doll, “You can actually fit in that?”

“Yep! I’ve made a few outfits! I also have a little…” Eli’s excited tone turned a little toward embarrassed, “dollhouse that I made to hang out in sometimes when I’m small.”

“Okay, that is so damn cute,” Deryn said.

Eli smiled shyly, turning quite brightly red once again. “Thank you.”

“Have you ever heard of mini baking?” Deryn asked.

Eli frowned, thinking, “Like those videos of people making tiny food?”

“Yeah, it’d be funny to have you make those,” Deryn said, “Imagine it; World’s smallest baker.”

“Maybe I’ll give it a try.” Eli said, noncommittally.

Deryn smiled, not pushing the idea. They took out a thermos. “Coffee?”

Eli shook their head, “No thanks. More of a tea person.”

“Afraid I didn’t pack a second thermos, but I can make the best tea latte you’ve ever tasted.” Deryn said.

“Oo sounds good.”

“Two years working at the Coffee Mill, and employee of the month many times,” Deryn bragged, “Hand ground coffee beans roasted in house,”

“Oh wow, I’ve never had a job before, I mean, I helped out in my dad’s shop a bit before but never like a Job job. Was it fun?”

“I loved it, well besides the terrible customers, but the owners always let me tell them off.” Deryn said. It helped Deryn could zap Karens with a bit of guilt, it was illegal technically, but very satisfying. “What does your dad do?”

“He makes custom furniture! I usually help him more in the back, too anxious to deal with customers. My mom is usually the one who deals with the customers.”

“Oh wow that is so cool,” Deryn said, “My mom’s a college teacher, my ma works doing house renovation, mostly painting”

“What does she teach?”

“History, mainly early modern,”

“That’s cool.”

“You know what’s not cool?” Deryn said, “Living in Ohio.”

“I’m from Ohio too.” Eli laughs,

“Oh, damn, I’m sorry,” Deryn laughed. “Actually I was born in Pennsylvania but mom got offered a tenure when I was six.”

“I’ve lived in Ohio my whole life.”

Deryn put a hand on their shoulder, “And for that I’m sorry,”

Eli laughed.

“If you could live anywhere in the United States, where would it be?” Deryn asked.

“I don’t know… I like the cold so maybe it’d be nice in one of the Northeastern states.”

“Good one, now, call me cliché but Seattle, the great green north, home of American coffee culture.”

“Never been to Seattle. I’d like to visit there.”

“Same,”

Was a pause for a while, Deryn drinking coffee and sharing snacks with Eli, talking about home and family. Eli looked out the window and watched the city go by as they got closer and closer to the school Eli’s anxiety started picking up again. They pulled Angel back to their lap and aggressively petted her.

“So empath huh… is anyone in this bus as scared as I am?”

“I’m afraid you kind of stood out,” Deryn said, “There’s anxiety but it’s mostly tempered by excitement.” Eli nodded gently, Deryn leaned over, “And that Venusian over there is very high.”

Eli glances over to the huge lizard-like alien that was currently having his drool wiped away by a chubby Asian kid. “high?”

“Oh yeah, I get a kind of contact-high just focusing on them,” Deryn laughs, feeling a little giddy and excitable like when they’d smoke weed.

“Wow.” Eli fidgeted a bit. “I’ve been homeschooled for the past few years so… suddenly going to a boarding school far away from my parents is… a lot.”

“Oh, damn I can imagine.”

“Are you nervous at all?”

“I’m not actually sure,” Deryn laughed a little nervously, “Sometimes in a big crowd it’s hard to tell me-feelings from crowd-feelings.”

Eli’s eyes widened, worry in their mind, “Really? That sounds kinda scary.”

“Well, I am hoping to get some mentoring,” Deryn answered, “Learn to better control it. It’s also easier if I have a ground,” They gently pet Hermes who purred gently, “Like him.”

Eli reached over and pet Hermes as well, “Well crossing fingers we both get better at controlling our powers.”

“Let’s hope so,” Deryn smiled.
